Women's Soccer Blanks Rhode Island College, 3-0

Providence, RI --- Senior goalkeeper Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, MA) helped Worcester State post the squads fifth shutout of the season as the Lancers defeated Rhode Island College, 3-0, at the RIC Soccer Field this evening.

WSU (9-3-1), ranked ninth in the most recent NSCAA New England Division III Poll, jumped out to an early lead in the 22nd minute thanks to senior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA). Clifford took the feed from sophomore Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) and broke loose in the box. The Lancers' captain knifed through the defense and ripped a shot past freshman netminder Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

RIC (2-10) was limited to just four shots in the first half, with its best opportunity coming off a free kick from senior midfielder Jenna Childs (Cranston, RI) that was easily hauled in by Sychtysz.

The Lancers broke the game open in the second half with a pair of goals, the first one coming courtesy of junior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) in the 49th minute. After a Worcester State shot deflected off an Anchorwomen defender in the box, first-year Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, MA) pounced on the loose ball and dished left to Beckman, who slipped behind the RIC defense and blasted a shot to the top far corner for her fourth goal of the year.

Worcester State added an insurance goal in the 68th minute when freshman Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT) recovered a loose ball in RIC territory about 10 yards outside the box. Archer sidestepped a defender and launched a shot past Maia for her first collegiate tally.

The Lancers outshot the Anchorwomen, 31-5, in the match, and held Rhode Island College to just one shot in the second half.

Sychtysz made one save in the win while Maia made eight saves in the loss for RIC. Sychtysz shared the shutout with first-year Danielle Grunbaum (Marlboro, MA), who made her first career appearance.

Sophomore goalkeeper Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, NH) spelled Maia, making three saves in the final 21 minutes. The contest marked the seventh time this fall the Anchorwomen have failed to score.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Johnson & Wales on Thursday at 6:30 while the Lancers will entertain Mass Maritime on homecoming at 1 PM.
