Worcester, MA- It is with profound sadness that the Worcester State Athletic Department announces the passing of men's ice hockey student-athlete Evan Armit. Evan, a beloved son, brother, teammate, and friend, passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 23, following a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma.
"Evan was an incredible student-athlete and beloved teammate. He will be greatly missed by our entire campus community" said Athletic Director Michael Mudd. "Our thoughts are with the Armit family at this difficult time."
Evan was a two-year member of the Lancer's Men's Ice Hockey team, pursuing a degree in Business Administration, and his passion for the sport carried him through a remarkable playing career, including time with the Winnipeg Freeze (MJHL), the Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL).
Beyond the rink, Evan was known for his strong work ethic, generosity, and character. Friends, teammates, and coaches remember him as a leader both on and off the ice—someone who always put others before himself.
"Evan embodied the very best qualities of a teammate and a friend—hardworking, humble, and selfless," said Worcester State Head Coach Jay Punsky. "He carried himself with quiet strength and treated everyone with kindness, never losing sight of the importance of family and friendship. His joy was infectious, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Though his time with us was far too brief, Evan leaves behind a legacy of heart, humility, and purpose."
Evan faced his recent battle with cancer with incredible strength, courage, and grace, inspiring countless people through his perseverance and his willingness to raise awareness and support for others.
A Celebration of Life for Evan will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd at 11 am (12pmET) at the Agricultural Center in Dryden. A private Interment of ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dryden Regional Health Centre at https://www.drhc.on.ca/donate.
As Evan had many friends worldwide in the hockey and university community, his Celebration of Life will be livestreamed at http://bit.ly/evanarmit
Evan's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and in the communities that rallied around him with love and support.
