Worcester, MA- After a few days away from the diamond game action the Worcester State Baseball team (13-14, 11-5) jumped back into conference action this afternoon as they faced off against the Anna Maria AMCATs in their single game set of the series at Marlborough High School.
Final
Worcester State: 3
Anna Maria: 4
How it Happened:
Worcester State would not waste any time getting on the board as junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) would get a single to third and grab second on a passed ball which allowed him to race home as on a junior Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) double to deep in the corner in left field.
The game would remain locked at 1-0 behind the pitch perfect location of senior Nolan Turner (Barnstable, MA) through the next four innings before the AMCATs managed to scrap together some contact for a 2-1 lead into the seventh.
Worcester had a great chance to settle the score at the top of the seventh as junior Tad Giardina (Reading, MA) would drill a single to the right with a junior Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) singling to the opposite side. A wild pitch would put them both in scoring position but the mound pressure from Anna Maria prevented them from crossing the final plate. The AMCATs managed to again collect some late inning runs as they managed to send another two across with two outs on the board for the 4-1 lead.
The top of the eighth put Worcester back within striking distance as Doyle reached on an error but sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) fielder's choice would replace him at first as junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) walk would put two on. Senior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA) would ground out to third but in the ensuing throw to first Catlin would grab run one of the inning. Senior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) would single to third and beat the throw while also providing time for Carpenter to make it 4-3.
Sophomore Matt Direnzo (Leicester, MA) would come in for relief for Turner to grab the final out of the bottom of the eight as Worcester looked to the bats to extend the game but Anna Maria held on for the 4-3 win..
What's Next:
The Lancers (13-15, 11-6) welcome the AMCATs to Worcester State tomorrow for their double header meeting with first pitch for game one at 1pm.
