Lancers Advance to MASCAC Semifinal Action Day Two, Defeating Owls in Season Sweep

Worcester, MA- After advancing through the opening round over Mass. Maritime and falling in a slugfest versus Salem State in game two of the day, the Lancers baseball team (19-19, 16-8) headed to Bridgewater State to take on the Westfield Owls in a winner advance game.

How it Happened:

The Owls would get on the board first to start the action, but junior Kevin Doyle (Bridgewater, MA) would single up the middle to score junior Derek De La Cruz (Providence, RI). Junior Alan Carpenter (Richmond, RI) would add his own RBI to bring in Doyle while junior Tyler Normandie (Lowell, MA) would manage to squeeze in Senior Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA). The final run of the inning came off a senior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) triple that would send home Normandie for the 4-1 first inning score.

The Owls picked up the lead in the top of the second with a four run putting but by the end of the third inning the Lancers were back on top with a four run inning of their own. A Carpenter double sent across Doyle, with Thurber scoring off a Westfield passed ball. Carpenter would be brought across home from a Normandie grounder while a bases loaded walk on sophomore Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) would force home Bates. 

Worcester would tack on another run in the bottom of the sixth as a Thurber sacrifice fly would send Doyle in for his third run of the game and score number nine for the Lancers. 

Sophomore Matt Direnzo (Leicester, MA) would claim the win with six innings of work and five strikeouts.

With the win, the Lancers claimed a sweep on the Owls on the year, with four wins on the season.

Worcester State is back in action at 11am tomorrow to face the loser of the Bridgewater State vs Salem State game scheduled for later today.
