Worcester, MA- After grabbing their first win of the season last weekend on homecoming, the Worcester State Football team(1-3, 1-2) was primed to repeat their success in another Saturday afternoon battle as they hosted Fitchburg State in just the Lancers second home game of the season.
Final
Worcester State: 6
Fitchburg State: 21
How it Happened:
In a rivalry that has gone the Lancers' way every year since 2019, the Blue and Gold came up short this time, falling to Fitchburg State on Saturday.
The Falcons struck first, marching down the field on their opening drive to take an early lead. After Worcester went three-and-out on their first possession, a miscue on a snap gave Fitchburg the ball at the Lancer four-yard line, an opportunity they quickly converted into a 14-0 advantage.
Worcester began to settle in on both sides of the ball, forcing a key defensive stop before the offense found its rhythm. Senior quarterback Cam Ayotte (Millbury, MA) connected with junior Noah Jodoin (Agawam, MA) on a 26-yard completion, which was followed by a Fitchburg penalty that moved the ball deep into Falcon territory. Junior Jermaine Norfleet (Agawam, MA) capped the nine-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14-6.
Both defenses tightened as the half wound down, but a late turnover proved costly. On the final play before halftime, a Lancer pass was intercepted and returned 86 yards by Fitchburg's Elijah Zaire McKnight, who lateraled the ball to teammate Jan Valls for the score, extending the Falcons' lead to 21-6 at the break.
The Lancers' defense came out strong in the second half, highlighted by a crucial tackle for loss from sophomore Cam Goodrich (Spencer, MA) to force a Fitchburg punt. Worcester's offense responded with a promising drive, but a fourth-down sack ended the threat. The defense continued to battle, forcing a fumble in the final quarter, but the Blue and Gold couldn't capitalize as the Falcons held on for their first win over Worcester since 2019.
Despite the loss, the Lancers showed resilience and defensive grit, setting the tone for the remainder of their conference schedule.
What's Next:
The Lancers (1-4, 1-3) are back on the road next week as they journey to UMass-Dartmouth for a Saturday afternoon 4pm kickoff.
