Williamstown, MA --- Despite senior Maurice Horton's (Detroit, MI) first career triple-double, Worcester State was defeated 89-83 this evening by Colby-Sawyer in the opening round of the Purple & Gold Tournament hosted by Williams. The Lancers (3-6) will play Southern Maine tomorrow at 5 PM in the consolation round.

Horton tallied a game-best 26 points with 12 assists and 10 rebounds while he also went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Senior Pat Hamilton (Templeton, MA) also registered a season-best 20 points with 8 boards as he went 9-for-10 from the field while junior Ryan Testagrossa (Athol, MA) added 14 points with three made trey's. Third-year Dave Douillette (Bridgewater, MA) rounded out the effort with 11 points and 6 caroms.

The contest went back and forth for the first 13 minutes of the opening frame with four ties and three lead changes before Colby-Sawyer used a 7-0 run to open up a 31-24 advantage with 6:03 left. Worcester State then seized the momentum and scored 12 unanswered points to take a 36-31 edge at the 1:47 mark.

Ahead 40-39 with 18 seconds left, Chargers senior David Rosso (Wilmington, VT) hit a three-pointer to trail by one and send both teams into the locker room at the break.

Colby-Sawyer eventually took the 44-43 lead early on in the second period on a trey by Russo at 18:46 and the Chargers would go ahead 53-47 five minutes later. With CSC up 55-51 at 10:19, Colby-Sawyer would outscore Worcester State 10-4 to bring the advantage into double-digits two minutes later and they also ballooned the lead by as many as 12 at 6:14 (73-61).

WSC sliced into the deficit with 10-3 spurt to trail by five at 4:20, but the Chargers went back up by 10 with 1:23 left in the game. The Lancers refused to go down as junior Jim Quinlivan (Rutland, MA) hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to make it a five point game, but the comeback was short lived as Colby-Sawyer hung on to post the six-point triumph.

Both teams shot well from the field as the CSC connected for 49 percent of their attempts while Worcester State shot 50 percent for the game. Colby-Sawyer also was deadly from downtown as they went 11-for-23 (48 percent) from beyond the arc.

Despite shouldering the loss, Worcester State controlled the boards with a 38-28 advantage overall and a 14-12 edge on the offensive glass. WSC also controlled the paint (38-26) and second chance points (18-8).

Colby-Sawyer scored 18 points off of 18 WSC miscues due in large part to 13 steals. CSC could have led by more, but shot 60 percent from the charity stripe for the game and in the second half as they went 14-for-23 in the final stanza.

The Chargers will play Williams at 7 PM in the championship after the host Ephs defeated Southern Maine 93-59 earlier this evening.
