Horton Paces Men's Basketball in Setback to Fredonia State

Rochester, NY --- Senior Maurice Horton (Detroit, MI) scored a team-best 19 points to lead four Worcester State players in double-figures, but the Lancers fell in a close 75-73 setback to SUNY Fredonia at the Rochester Institute of Technology tournament this evening. WSC will play the loser of the Fisher-RIT game later tonight.

With the Blue Devils up by their largest margin of the second period at 9:06 (62-55), the Lancers went on a 10-1 run over the next seven minutes to go up 65-63 on a trey by Dave Douillette (Bridgewater, MA) with 2:18 left in regulation.

After Fredonia canned a pair of free throws, both squads traded buckets before Julius Bryant (Buffalo, NY) knotted the game at 67-67 with 79 seconds remaining. The Lancers had an opportunity to take the lead, but missed a lay-up. Brad Cooper (Monticello, NY) hit a key lay-up to put the Blue Devils up for good with 38 seconds left.

Fredonia would go six-for-six from the charity stripe to ice the game, despite a pair of three-pointers from freshman Tim Henault (Lunenburg, MA).

Douillette contributed a career-high 17 points and six boards while Horton would finish with eight boards, seven assists and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Jamaal Atkins (Webster, MA) registered 14 points with five caroms and six helpers while Henault chipped in with 10 points.

WSC controlled the paint as they scored 36 of their 73 points in the key, but the Blue Devils edged out the Lancers on second chance points (19-17) and points off turnovers (19-15). Fredonia also dominated the boards as they held a 38-29 advantage in total rebounds and a 17-12 lead off the offensive glass.

The Blue Devils shot 50 percent from the field in the first half (16-for-32), but were held to 39 percent in the second period (9-for-23) and they were 0-for-4 from the three-point line. Worcester State connected for 49 percent of their attempts from inside the arc and they went 7-for-21 from downtown.

The Lancers will take a break and play their next game at the Purple and Gold Tournament at Williams. WSC will face off against Colby-Sawyer in the opening round on January 3.
