Men's Basketball Falls At Regis College, 72-65

Weston, MA --- Regis sophomore Ryan Chambers (Abington, MA) and freshman Osanto Marc (Kissimee, FL) both combined for 41 points to help lead the Pride to a 72-65 triumph over Worcester State in men's non-conference basketball action this evening on the road.

With the win and the loss, both team's records now stand at 6-10 on the season.

Chambers paced the hosts with a game-best 22 points on eight of 14 shooting from the floor with six made treys while Marc chipped in with 22 points and six boards. First-year Ethan Peana (Staten, NY) was also pitched in with eight rebounds, six points and five assists.

The Lancers were propelled by junior Monte Goodwin (Boston, MA/Belmont) who finished with 21 points, six caroms and three blocks as sophomore Mike Gittens (Uncasville, CT) chipped in with 16 points – including four three-pointers.

Second-year Robert Hunter (St. Louis, MI) added 15 points and a trio of steals and junior Kyle Ferreira (Westport, MA) recorded nine points. Hunter and Ferreira both combined for 11 of WSU's 13 assists.

The first nine minutes of the contest saw two ties and a pair of lead changes before Worcester State would go on a 12-2 spurt and take a 24-15 advantage with 8:18 remaining in the opening period.

With WSU ahead 26-18, less 60 seconds later, the Pride responded and outscored the visitors 16-4 over the next 5½ minutes as they would take a 34-31 lead ending the run with a Marc trifecta.

After Goodwin sank a pair of free throws, Chambers took his turn to drill a three-pointer with 1:30 left. Ferreira would get the Lancers to within one with 52 ticks left, but Marc would end the period with a lay-up to send both teams to the locker room with Regis ahead 39-35.

To start off the second stanza, the score was equaled on one occasion and there were four lead changes over the first five minutes. As Worcester State nursed the 50-49 edge with 14:49 remaining, the Pride would hold their opponents scoreless over the next 3½ minutes with a 9-0 rally as they took the lead for good.  

The contest never went into double-figures as WSU remained within two-to-three possessions for most of the next 10 minutes of game play.

The Lancers would make one final push to make it a three-point game with 2:59 remaining, but the Pride would close out the game with an 8-3 run and seal it making three of their last four shots from the charity stripe.

Regis out rebounded their opponents 35-27 overall and 13-9 off the offensive glass. Both squads were even in points off turnovers (12-12), but WSU held advantages in second-chance points (14-6) and transition baskets (10-8).

The Pride connected for nearly half of their shots (48 percent – 28-for-58) as they also 53 percent for the game from beyond the arc (9-for-17).

The Blue and Gold also shot well from the field finishing with a 45 percent line (24-for-53), but they only hit five of their 14 attempts from three-point land. The Lancers were 75 percent for the game from the free throw line (12-for-16).

Both squads return to their respective conference schedules on Tuesday evening. Worcester State heads to Salem State for a 7:30 battle while Regis hosts Mitchell at 7 PM.
