Men's Basketball Races Past Regis 82-58

Worcester, MA --- Junior Dane Jobst (Athol, MA) scored a game high 27 points to go along with 11 boards to help Worcester State race past Regis 82-58 in non-conference men's basketball action this evening at the Lancer Gymnasium.

The Blue and Gold (3-1) were also paced by junior Robert Hunter (St. Louis, MO) who turned in a double-double of his own contributing 20 points and 10 boards in the victory. Senior Kyle Ferreira (Westport, MA) was solid with nine points, four assists and a trio of rebounds.

The Pride (0-6) was led by first-year Carlos Bermudez-Glean (Boston, MA) who tallied 20 points in the losing effort while sophomore Evin Matted (Hartford, CT) chipped in with an all-around effort totaling seven points, four boards, and three blocks for the visitors.

After a three point jumper by junior Ryan Chambers (Abington, MA) gave Regis an 8-5 advantage at the 16:31 mark of the first half, WSU outscored the visitors 34-18 to close out the frame highlighted by 11 points by Hunter including a 5-for-5 showing at the charity stripe.

Worcester State dominated the paint in the first half finishing with a 24-10 edge and using an 11-6 lead on offensive caroms, WSU held a 10-5 advantage on second-chance points.

As the Lancers continued to maintain their double-digit margin, the Pride tried to claw their way back into the game after a converted free throw by freshman Mike Downing (Brockton, MA) made it an 11 point game with 12:17 left to play (52-41).

However, that would be as close as Regis got as WSU cruised ahead for the win.

Senior Clayton Timas (New Bedford, MA) was able to spark a 17-8 run to close out the game with two ferocious dunks midway through the final period.

Worcester State shot 44 percent from the field (30-for-69) and for the second straight game was able to control the interior game outscoring Regis, 50-22, in the painted area. The Lancers also held the advantage on the glass, 49-27.

Regis managed to shoot 33 percent from behind the arc (5-for-15) and actually held the 24-21 lead in points off of turnovers. They also blocked seven shots and swiped 10 steals as a team.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday night when the Lancers travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 7 PM tip-off and Regis returns home to take on Lesley at 7:30.
