Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Basketball team (1-2, 0-0) hosted their home opener tonight as they welcomed WPI back to Brissette court for a Friday night battle.
Final
Worcester State: 73
WPI: 81
How it Happened:
Tonight's Worcester derby opened with explosive energy, as both teams came out aggressive and fast from the tip. Worcester State struck first and controlled the early momentum behind strong offensive efforts from junior guard Dajon Burton (Brockton, MA), sophomore guard Rayan Sablon (Stoughton, MA), and sophomore forward Joe Okla (Worcester, MA).
WPI eventually found its rhythm and applied real pressure, swinging the momentum and taking a lead midway through the first half. After a Lancer timeout, Worcester State regrouped and responded with intensity; attacking the basket on offense while tightening up defensively. Senior Johnny Annan (Worcester, MA) and sophomore Camdyn Shoesmith (Bedford, MA) set the tone with tough defensive stops that helped slow the Engineers' ball movement.
The final minutes of the first half featured the most spirited play of the game to that point. The Lancers dug deep to cut back into WPI's lead, led by junior forward Ethan Daleba (Dorchester, MA), who sparked the comeback push. Though Worcester State entered halftime trailing 41–29, the team carried confidence and belief into the locker room.
As expected, the Lancers came out firing in the second half, making a loud statement with an early surge that fueled a dominant 15–2 run in just five minutes. The burst tied the game and made it clear that Worcester State was playing with a new level of urgency. As the Lancers' performance elevated, so did the atmosphere inside the gym, fueling their energy on both ends of the floor.
Worcester State continued to attack, score, and clamp down defensively. However, the physical nature of the game sent both teams to the free throw line often, with WPI capitalizing on those opportunities to rebuild its lead. The score remained tight throughout the half until the final two minutes, when the Engineers managed to pull away and secure an 81–73 win.
Strong second-half efforts from Annan, Sablon, and Okla kept the Lancers in striking distance, but the standout spark came from sophomore Jaydon Buckle (Windsor Locks, CT), whose dynamic play on both ends inspired his teammates and helped drive the comeback effort.
It was a gritty, spirited performance by Worcester State, one that showed heart and fight from start to finish, despite the narrow defeat.
