Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Ice Hockey team (8-7-4, 1-4-3) hosted MCLA in a crucial Saturday night conference battle. After a tough loss Thursday, the Lancers were looking to add a win to their column.
Final
Worcester State: 5
MCLA: 3
How it Happened:
The Lancers started off the scoring a little after halfway through the first period when senior Anders Grongstad (Royal Oak, MI) was able to find the net with the support of sophomore Cam Quigley (Quincy, MA), giving the Lancers an early advantage however the Trailblazers would get their night started as well after a shot was ripped right back and tied things up.
During the second, the Lancers came out firing and were able to capitalize right away, making it 2-1 and reclaiming the lead off the stick of sophomore Bryce Grandbois (Windsor, ON) with the help of junior Stirling Nash (Edmonds, WA) and junior Matthew Nuzzolilo (Worcester, MA). Both teams really amped up their physical play during this period and we saw penalties on both teams however, MCLA capitalized on their opportunities and brought it back to even after they responded once again. Both teams would then trade goals later in the period as the Lancers again claimed a lead off of the work of Grandbois with the added benefits from first year Sean Tyrie (East Quogue, NY) for a 3-2 lead but it was short lived as MCLA got it right back, tying the game for the third time in two periods.
The third period was a back and forth offensive attack from both squads as each team looked for the goal to come away with the win in regulation. Both goalies played phenomenal defense, especially Donovan Alfama, a Junior from Douglas, MA. With a little over 6 and a half left to play in the third, sophomore Jacob Costa (Cranston, RI) would rocket in a pass from senior Shane Prifrel (Inver Grove Heights, MA) from the top left of the zone for a crucial goal to put the Lancers up 4-3. The Lancers fought off the last effort surge by MCLA and got themselves some extra cushion with under a minute to play as junior Brady Carpenter (Peabody, MA) added the cherry on top, making it 5-3 with the assist of Prifrel once again.
