Springfield, MA --- Senior teammates Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) and Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) are among the top three out of 11 entrants in the heptathlon after the first day of the Division III New England Indoor Championships hosted by Springfield.
After four full events, Sliwoski has tallied 2,571 points as he is just 139 off of current leader senior Eric Wainman (Glastonbury, CT) of Bates. Begley isn't too far behind with 2,448 points and sophomore Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) of WPI is on their heels with 2,392 points, tied for fourth overall.
Sliwoski won the long jump (21-0.50/6.41 meters), placed third in the shot put (39-1.75/11.93m) before vaulting to fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (7.44) and tying for fifth in the high jump (5-7.75/1.72m).
After Begley captured the top prize in the shot put (5-6.50/1.69m), he cleared third in the 60 meter hurdles (7.37), tied for eighth in the high jump (5-6.50/1.69m) and equaled ninth in the long jump (18-0.25/5.49m).
Both student-athletes are chasing the benchmark set last season when Sliwoski registered 4,670 points which was good for third place and All-Division III New England accolades for the second straight year.
Begley has never competed in the heptathlon at the Division III New England meet, but earned seventh in the shot put for All-New England honors (47-4.25/14.43m).
