Men's Outdoor Track Takes Home Sixth At Division III New England Championships

Waterville, ME --- Sophomore Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) was second overall in the 110 meter hurdles with a school record time of 14.42 as he helped lead the Worcester State men's track and field team to sixth place on the final day of the Division III New England Outdoor Championships this afternoon at Colby.

Bates (144 points) edged MIT (143) for the men's crown, followed by Tufts (71), Williams (60) and Coast Guard (46) while the Lancers scored 38 points for the highest-finish for a public institution ahead of RIC (36 - 7th Place) and Westfield State (33 - 8th Place).

The Blue and Gold also tied for their highest finish at the outdoor championships which was in the inagural meet in 1980.

Gibson eclipsed the previous mark that had been set by former standout Jason Monette (14.68) at the Division III New England Championships at Springfield in 2005 and he is now ranked third in the NCAA Division III in the event. Gibson wrapped up his day with eighth in the 200 (22.37) for All-New England accolades.

Other medal winners included sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) continues to shine on the track with third in the 100 (11.11) and he teamed with senior Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) and classmates Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) and Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) for fifth in the 4x100 meter relay (42.53).

Junior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) cleared 6-4 (1.93m) to earn All-New England laurels for the third consecutive year while teamate Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) had a heave of eighth in the javelin (178-0/54.26m).

Alley was also ninth in the 100 (11.39) as senior Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) notched 22nd in the same event (11.61). Gannon was 12th in the 400 (50.23) while Parrella and junior Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, MA) were 11th (55.41) and 13th (55.68), respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles.

In the field, Begley wrapped up his day with 12th in the shot put (43-11.75). Junior Steve Fleming (Ludlow, MA) and senior Andrew Garcia (Brea, CA) tied for 16th place in the pole vault (13-3.50/4.05m).

In relay action, the 4x800 team of senior Kerry Sabanty (Stoughton, MA), junior Connor O'Neill (Dudley, MA), sophomore Patrick Bova (Princeton, MA) and fourth-year Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) finished 11th with an ECAC Division III Championship time of 8:03.98.

The 4x400 relay of Parrella, Gannon, sophomore Shaun Corum (Billerica, MA) and freshman Justin Trafford (Milton, MA) took 19th (3:30.36).

Next week select members of the Blue and Gold will compete at the Open New England Championships hosted by Stonehill.

Friday's Recap

Waterville, ME --- Junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) and sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) both earned All-New England certificates to help the Worcester State men's outdoor track and field team place third after the first day at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Colby.

The Lancers are currently in third place with 12 points after four completed events, just off of Bates' sum of 42 and MIT's sum of 19.

Sliwoski finished the final day of the decathlon in third with 6,068 points, just 240 points off of the leader and 99 points off of second. Sliwoski's

Sliwoski had the second-highest pole vault (13-3.75/4.06m), the third-best 110 hurdles split (16.20), both the fourth highest discus (107-3/32.68m) and javelin throws (155-6/47.41m) while his 1,500 meter run time was ninth (5:13.17).

Truong bettered his long jump and his mark with third overall (22-7.25/6.89m) as he was fourth in the same event last season at the Division III New England's.

Junior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) rounded out the competators with 20th in the hammer (140-10/42.93m).

Thursday's Recap

Waterville, ME --- Junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) registered 3,171 points for fifth place at the Division III New England decathlon this afternoon at Colby College.

Sliwoski had the top toss in the shot put (38-4.50/11.70m) while he also registered a split of 11.75 in the 100 meters for sixth and a time of 52.78 in the 400 for eighth. In his other events, he had the seventh-best leap of 19-8.50 feet (6.01m) in the long jump and he cleared 5-9.50 (1.77m) to tie for fifth in the high jump.

Three weeks ago, Sliwoski ecplised the school record at the Holy Cross decathlon with 6,157 points for the 15th highest total in the NCAA Division III.
