Mireku Takes Charge as Lancers Shine at Bonnie Edmondson Classic
Worcester, MA- In the final meet before the MASCAC Championship, the Lancers Track and Field team journeyed to Eastern Connecticut to compete at the Bonnie Edmondson Classic. Worcester State was set to mark their final attempts for qualifying times into the MASCAC Championships at Bridgewater State next week with their finishes today. They were led by the top performance of senior Brodie Jacques (Rehoboth, MA) and first year Michael Mireku (Worcester, MA) who finished in first in the 100m and triple jump respectively.
Worcester, MA- In the final meet before the MASCAC Championship, the Lancers Track and Field team journeyed to Eastern Connecticut to compete at the Bonnie Edmondson Classic. Worcester State was set to mark their final attempts for qualifying times into the MASCAC Championships at Bridgewater State next week with their finishes today. They were led by the top performance of senior Brodie Jacques (Rehoboth, MA) and first year Michael Mireku (Worcester, MA) who finished in first in the 100m and triple jump respectively. The men's team would claim fourth with a 68 point grab on the day.
Jacques and junior Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA) led the sprinting charge for Worcester as they claimed 1st and second in the 100m down in Connecticut.Jacques would finish in a time of 11.03 with Boudreau hot on his time with an 11.05. Joining the speed racing duo in the event was first year Yael Lopez (Milford, MA), Albert Kyereme (Springfield, MA), James Almeida (Auburn, MA) and sophomore Khalijiah King (Natick, MA). Lopez would finish in 22nd with an 11.54, Kyereme in 31st at 11.75 and Almeida would close out the 11 second run with a 11.80 for 36th. King would cross in 54th at a time of 12.90. In the double distance Mireku would claim 19th in a time of 23.53. Lopez would be back in action, this time finishing in 36th in a time of 24.51. Finishing with .02 seconds of each other for 42nd and 43rd were senior Nicholas Violette (Webster, MA) with a 24.97 and first year Anthonio Tyndale (Worcester, MA) with a 24.99. First year CJ Harrell (Holland, MA) would claim 45th at 25.20 with fellow first year Patrick Harvey (Holden, MA) coming in at 25.39 for 47th. King would be tight on the time in 48th, crossing in 25.50.
Senior Brian O'Leary (Marlborough, MA) would end his 400m day in 19th on a 54.79 with junior Alan Gomez (Clinton, MA) claiming 21st in the event with a 56.15. In the double distance, sophomore Kelan Mahoney (Oakham, MA) would finish seventh in a brisk 2:01.28, followed within second by senior Alexander Lucier (Gardner, MA) in a time of 2:05.97. First year Taku Pettengill (Shirley, MA) would finish in a time of 2:09.79 for a 19th place crossing with sophomore Jacksen Bolduc (Auburn, MA) finishing at 2:10.94 for 21st. Closing out the middle distance was junior Andrew Stokes (Wilmington, MA) in 32nd with a 2:17.74.
In those 3,000m first year Dan Smith (Medway, MA) would claim 8th on a time of 10:04.93 while junior Alex Matsuyasu (Newton, MA) would take home 13th with a 11:00.06.
Closing out track activity on the day was the 4x400m teams with each team finishing back to back in 7th and 8th. The Gomez, Harvey, Almeida and Pettengill contingent would finish in 3:47.83 while Lucier, Bolduc, first year Ryan Brown (Salem, MA) and Mahoney finished in 3:50.27.
With focus shifted to the field senior Nicholas Violette (Webster, MA) would claim 5th in the Pole Vault on a 2.95m height while senior Giovanni Casiano (Oxford, MA) would take home 7th on a 2.35m landing. Jacques would be back in action in the long jump where he would claim 3rd on 6.71m, leading the Lancer contingent. Tyndale would claim 17th with a 6.03m measurement in the sand with Violeete at 31st with a 5.70m, Boudreau in 38th with a 5.42m, Casiano in 39th a 5.39m and Almeida in 40th with a 5.38m to round out the 5m portion of the long jump. Mireku would take a turn in the jump pit and find success as he ended his day in first place in the triple jump on a 13.42m landing while fellow first year Tommy Silva took 12th with a 11.73m.
In the throwing circle senior Max O'Connor (Dedham, MA) would take second in the discus on a 41.27m, 11th in hammer on a 40.38 mark and 15th in the shot put on a 11.13m landing. Following tight behind O'Connor all day would be sophomore Garrett Papierski (Webster, MA) who would claim 4th in the discus on a 38.41m, 5th in the shot put with a 12.92m and 13th in the hammer with a 38.29m. First year Galvin Delgado (Douglas, MA) would join the duo for two events as he claimed 14th in the shot put with a 11.16m and 16th in the discus at 33.15m. Closing out the shot put field for the Lancers was first year Dominic Beauchesne (Dudley, MA) who finished in 31st with an 8.82m and matching the finish in the discus on a landing of 26.17m. First year Hunter Cormier (Westminster, MA) would come in 26th in the discus with a 29.35m mark and 17th in the hammer with a 34.14m where he would be joined by first year Andrew Lucier, who finished in 21st with a 30.97m.
Wrapping up the day was the Javelin where first year Anndrew Lucier (Gardner, MA) claimed 15th in the 40.94m with Delgado claiming 23rd on a 37.73m and Cormier in 26th with a 35.20m. First year Zachary Stewart would close out the meet with a 29.99m for 33rd.
Worcester State has set their qualifying marks for next Friday's Championship meet in a race for medals and All Conference glory.
