VanderMolen named Head Coach and Coordinator of Operations of Cross Country and Track and Field

Worcester, MA- Worcester State Athletic Director Michael Mudd is pleased to announce that the first full time Head Coach and Coordinator of Operations of Cross Country and Track and Field is Scott VanderMolen. The newly crafted position will see VanderMolen overseeing the full slate of six programs in the department immediately. In addition, VanderMolen will serve as a liaison with the Worcester State Admissions Department focusing on strengthening relationships with regional athletic departments and student-athletes. The program just wrapped up its first action of the season, traveling to Fitchburg State for the Jim Sheehan Invitational where the Men finished in second and the Women claimed third, the team is next in action on September 16 when they travel to UMass-Dartmouth for the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.

"We were very fortunate to have a great applicant pool for this newly created position, and Scott checked all of the boxes we were looking for in a candidate" states Mudd.  "He is a very important hire for our program.  His experience coaching these sports at a state school in the Northeast has allowed him to effectively navigate the recruiting landscape.  We feel that Worcester State has the resources to offer a great experience for student-athletes in these sports and afford them the opportunity to experience success in and out of competition.  Scott is the right person to help us reach these goals."

VanderMolen was previously the head coach of the Men's and Women's Cross Country and Women's Outdoor Track team at Framingham State University, where he helped guide the track and field program from club to varsity status. He helped guide the Women's Outdoor Track program from club to varsity status in 2018. During his tenure with the Rams, VanderMolen led the team in its increase in roster size over his time with the program, going from 12 to 34 athletes. He was named MASCAC Coach of the Year twice and coached 12 athletes to MASCAC All-Conference awards and five individual champions in cross country and six on the track and field team along with five All-New England Qualifiers.

Prior to his arrival at Framingham, he served as a coach for the Elms College Cross Country team and at Tully High School with their Track and Field Program. He is a certified Endurance Event Specialist and a USATF Track and Field Coach.

VanderMolen received his bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst where he competed in both cross country and track and field as an 11-season varsity athlete; where he was a member of the school record holding 4x800 team, as well as the 2^nd and fifth fastest. His 4x800 team was the New England 4x800 New England Champions. He earned all-conference honors in the A-10 for his time in indoor 1000m, while also recording the 3^rd fastest 800m in the school's history. In 2020, he graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Masters in Sports Management Certification of Athletic Administration. He is currently USTFCCCA certified in Strength & Conditioning and Level II Endurance Events as well as Level I Track and Field certified with USATF.
