Worcester, MA --- The Clark University softball team have a few more milestones to add to its 30th Anniversary Celebration this weekend. First-year Sarah Carter (Worcester, MA) pitched the program's first-ever perfect game in Clark's 9-0 second game victory over Worcester State College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday. 

In that game, the Cougars also set a new mark for homeruns in a season (23), surpassing last year's record of 21. Winners of six straight, Clark (16-6) also won the opener, 4-0.   

"I didn't know I was pitching a perfect game," said Carter, who struckout just one batter in the game.  "I wasn't really paying attention.  I was just focusing on each batter."

"It's exciting to know that I was the first one ever," she added. 

Carter, who improves to 7-2 overall, got WSC's Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) to groundout to second base for the final out and the perfect game. 

Clark got two runs in the first frame, but broke the game open with a six-run third inning highlighted by back-to-back homeruns. First-year Katherine Tutela (Dalton, MA) launched her second homer of the year - a two run shot to left field - to give Clark the new season homerun mark and sophomore Darcy Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, CA) followed with a round-tripper of her own to centerfield. It was Kurashige-Elliott's team-leading sixth homerun of the year. 

Sophomore Catherine Costopoulos (Tyngsboro, MA) gave up six hits and did not issue a walk in the losing effort.     

In the opener, Clark scored all the runs they would need in the first inning. Sophomore Melissa Traft (Milton, MA) doubled home two runs and Tutela and sophomore Joanna Clark (Windham, ME) delivered RBI singles for a 4-0 lead.

Traft tossed a complete game two-hitter with eight strikeouts to improve to 7-4. 

Junior Veronica Clark (Worcester, MA) and newcomer Karen Feeley (West Springfield, MA) each collected a hit for Worcester State.

Caron took the loss for the Lancers.  She scattered seven hits, fanned three and walked two. 

Clark will travel to Smith College for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday (3:30 p.m.), while Worcester State will play at Westfield State College for a conference twinbill on Saturday (12 p.m.).
