Herring and Sweeney Earn Spots on MASCAC All-Conference Teams
WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University’s Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) have been named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference First and Seconds teams, respectively, as released by the league Wednesday (Feb. 28) afternoon.
WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) have been named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference First and Seconds teams, respectively, as released by the league Wednesday (Feb. 28) afternoon.
Herring, a 6-1 junior center, led the league in field goal percentage (57.3%), and blocks (83) while leading her team in points (347), points per game (12.9), field goals made (153), and rebounds (215). She totaled eight double-doubles throughout the season, and also reached a milestone as a junior, notching her 1,000th career point in the Lancers' MASCAC quarterfinal win over Salem State.
The West Brookfield, Mass. native was a recipient of the Worcester City Tournament All-Tournament Team (11/18/17), a MASCAC Player of the Week recipient (11/27/18), a 3-time Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week, and was named to the New England Women's Basketball Association (WACBA) Honor Roll twice throughout the season.
Sweeney, a 5-10 sophomore guard, averaged 9.9 rebounds, 7.6 points, 5.4 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 21 games played. She was third in the conference in rebounds per game, defensive rebounds (155), and total assists (113). She recorded five double-doubles and a triple-double against MCLA, which the Lancers women's basketball program had not seen in years.
Sweeney was a WACBA women's basketball Player of the Week recipient (1/17/18), named to the NEWBA honor roll twice throughout the season, and was also recognized by D3hoops.com as an honoree of the Women's Basketball Team of the Week (1/15/18).
The women's basketball team completed the 2017-18 season at 13-14 overall and 6-6 in the MASCAC under the direction of 24th-year head coach Karen Tessmer. The Lancers tied for third place in the confernece, earned the fourth seed in the MASCAC tournament, defeated Salem State in the quarterfinals, and fell to the No. 1 seed, Westfield State University, in the semifinals.
Framingham State's Mary Kate O'Day was named the MASCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, Mikaela Mitchell of Fitchburg State was tabbed the MASCAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year, while Walter Paschal of Framingham State earned the MASCAC Women's Basketball Champion's Choice Coach of the Year Award.
