Women's Hoops Bests Springfield

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team closed out its fall semester with a 55-48 win over Springfield College in non-conference action Tuesday night at John P. Brissette Court.

With the win, Worcester State moves to 6-4 overall on the season, while the Pride drops to 5-5.

The teams played an even first quarter, but the Lancers dominated the second to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room. Worcester State outscored the Pride 15-2 in the quarter, led by six points from reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Week Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine). The only two points Springfield scored in the period came on a pair of Grace Dzindolet free throw on the quarter's opening possession.

Springfield closed the gap in the third quarter behind 10 points from Alex Goslin. The Pride outscored Worcester State 16-11 in the period to close the gap to 39-32.

The Lancers closed the deal in the fourth by outscoring the visitors 16-15. Freshman Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored eight points in the fourth to lead Worcester State.

MacMillan and senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) each scored 12 points for the Lancers to lead the hosts to the victory, while senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) had a rock solid game with six points, 14 rebounds, six steals, five assists, and three blocks. Goslin was Springfield's leading scorer with 20 points, all in the second half.

The Lancers will be off until January 7, when they travel to Saint Joseph's College (Me.) to take on the Monks. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
