LeMay Named All-Tournament Team as Lancers Fall to Mariners

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Worcester State came from five points down in the final two minutes to tie the game, but Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) made a layup with thirty-two seconds left and the Mitchell College women's basketball team defeated the Lancers 57-54 on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament at Morrell Gymnasium.

Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after a double-double against host Bowdoin on Friday night. LeMay averaged 13.5 points and 11 rebounds over the weekend for Worcester State.

The Lancers (2-4) were led by 14 points from Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.), who made a layup at the 1:00 mark of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 54. Gallella scored four of the five points in that run, opening with a layup to cut a 54-49 deficit to just three. She had a steal on the next possession to create a Worcester State opportunity that led to free-throws for LeMay, and then tied the game on a fast break layup with an assist from Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.), who had grabbed a defensive rebound.

Wiley led all players with 19 points, the final two of which would ultimately be the game-winning layup. She also had 11 rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block a day after reaching the career 1,000 point plateau.

Worcester trailed by three after one quarter, but led by two at the break and four after three quarters.

A LeMay jump shot with 8:00 to play gave the Lancers a 45-40 lead, but a three-pointer by Dede Stevenson (Hartford, Conn.) and a layup by Chelsea Marcano (Bronx, N.Y.) gave Mitchell the edge less than two minutes later. Marcano hit another triple as the Mariners (4-1) built their lead to its eventual five-point margin.

Marcano had five points, four assists and seven rebounds for Mitchell, who got 14 points from Sam McKenna (Millbrook, N.Y.) off the bench, outscoring Worcester's reserves (12 points) on her own.

Erin Gallella had ten rebounds to lead the Lancers, along with four assists and two steals. Calli Korbey (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored five points off the Worcester bench, including hitting on her only three-pointer and both of her field goal attempts.

Both teams shot around 35% from the floor, and both took 16 three-pointers, but Mitchell hit 7 of their triples, to just four by Worcester State.

Worcester continues their extended road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Keene State for a 5:00 PM tip.
