Worcester, MA- After a thrilling back and forth game versus WPI last night to kick off the opening day of the Worcester City Tournament, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (0-1, 0-0) faced off with Anna Maria in the consolation meeting.
Final
Worcester State: 72
Anna Maria: 50
How it Happened:
The Lancers would not waste any time getting the action started as junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) would charge down the court of the tipoff to put Worcester up 2-0 early. The AMCATs would grab an early lead seconds later off a three but Worcester would go on the attack, scoring 11 unanswered points before Anna Maria could record their next basket. They would manage to cut the lead down to six for a brief time in the opening quarter, but Waldron would hit three and first year Derin Tokcan (Istanbul, TR) would find the space for a jumper to push the lead back to 11 before the AMCATs would close it down to a nine point game in the final seconds, topped off with a 10 point cushion thank to a junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) free throw.
The second quarter was a complete Worcester controlled quarter, starting from the Waldron layup just over a minute in to find the score at 23-11 until sophomore Ella Tatrault's (Norton, MA) final layup of the quarter in the final seconds to send it to halftime at 46-13. Worcester would lead the scoring with a 15-2 advantage in the quarter and take solid control of the action.
Anna Maria would get themselves bacon track in the third quarter, opening up the action with eight points before a junior Ayden Gulliver (Cranston, RI) three would provide some offensive life to Worcester. Worcester then would record eight points during the next seven minute stretch to Anna Maria's five, to slowly create a more steady back and forth flow on the court between the two squads ending with a 57-31 score heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Waldron would again lead off the scoring in the fourth with a kip layup off a pass from senior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) to begin the back and forth start of the quarter. The two teams would trade baskets during the fourth, but neither team would go on any major runs to change the course of the game as Worcester State would stay the course for the 72-50 victory.
Waldron led the Lancers with 17 points while Smith would claim the board game with eight in the game.
