Final
Worcester State: 61
Wellesley: 73
How it Happened:
Senior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) would start the strong first quarter for Worcester as she nailed a three pointer to claim the early lead. Junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) would tack on a driving layup to take the 5-0 lead as Worcester laid the ground work for a back and forth battle with the Blues who would slowly work their way back into the action. The Lancers would claim a six point lead before Wellesley made a late quarter charge to close the gap to 1 after the first 10.
Worcester would work to preserve their lead but the offensive momentum was in the Blue's corner in the second quarter as they managed to claim the lead and get ahead by six points of their own before Worcester managed to gain control of the shifting sand sending the game into half at 28-29.
A third quarter slow down would find the Blue's trying to pull away but Worcester was not going to allow them to be shaken off as junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would start the scoring and begin a back and forth quarter and second half. Worcester would record 17 points in the third with 53% shooting from the floor as they defensively worked Wellesley. Their double digit scoring would continue in the fourth but the mate turnovers in the final quarter would provide Wellesley with just the edge they needed to hold off Worcester claiming the 61-73 victory.
Waldron would lead the Lancer charge with 17 points while Smith would claim nine boards on the night.
What's Next:
Worcester State (1-2, 0-0) continues on the road on Friday when they journey to Lasell for a 7pm tipoff.
