Worcester, MA- Wrapping up their 2025 portion of the season the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (3-6, 0-0) takes on the University of Olivet in the consolation match of the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament hosted by Transylvania University.
Final
Worcester State: 47
Olivet: 66
How it Happened:
The first quarter of this game was quite balanced due to physical defense. Both teams struggled early on to get decent shots off and convert to points on the board. Solid ball movement early on helped the Lancers find their way as they managed to get into the swing of things with the help of junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA), junior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) and junior Aydan Gulliver (Cranston, RI). On the defensive end, the whole team put in the effort to limit the Olivet offense.
The shot-making of Gulliver and Senior Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) were the important factors that helped the Lancers put even more numbers on the board. The quarter ended 12-16 in Olivet's favor, with the Lancers not far behind and pushing hard to get the lead.
The second found the Comets begin pressing with more energy, leaving the Lancers looking for a restructure. This led to the Lancers focusing on defense in lieu of offensive. Nonetheless, the Lancers did not give in and continued to do the best they could. With the help of Gulliver, Haynes and Condon, they were able to put a few points on the board, to head into the half with a 21-38.
This third quarter was a turning point for the Lancers. After a slow second quarter performance, they turned things around to focus more offensively. Defensively, the Lancers would keep the Comets offense to nine points while offensively, players such as Gulliver and first year Derin Tokcan (Istanbul, TR) led the charge. Shooting percentages, with the simultaneous defensive work, saw the Lancers slowly but surely sneak back up to the Comets' lead. Free throws kept the Comets alive and in the lead but Worcester let it be known that this game was going to be a battle in the fourth as they worked the score to 32-47.
In the final quarter, Worcester showed resilience and strength. This last 10 minutes was a battle, with both teams playing as hard as they did all game. Efforts by junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA), Gulliver and sophomore Emma Quinn (Wakefield, MA), as well as the rest of the team kept the Lancers in a strong competitive position. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to catch back up to the Comets' lead falling 47-66.
