Worcester, MA- Coming off a crucial win this past weekend, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (6-11, 3-3) looked to gain footing in the conference standings with a trip to current top-seated Bridgewater State.
Final
Worcester State: 49
Bridgewater State: 83
How it Happened:
The Bears went on an early run to start the game to jump out to a quick lead but senior Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) would stem their charge with Worcester's first baskets. A Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) layup just under halfway through the first would put the Lancers ahead for the long haul, jumping out to a seven point lead off the efforts of juniors Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) and Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA). The final seconds would see the Bears dig their way back into the fight as a 13-12 score started the second. The next 10 minutes began with swapping of leads and points. The Bears would go up by as much as five in the quarter, but the Lancers never allowed them out of their sights as the game settled at 25-28 by the half.
The second half opened with strong efforts from junior Aydan Gulliver (Cranston, RI), Waldron, and Lomonaco, who helped keep the offense in a groove despite Bridgewater State's strong defense. The Lancers continued to force turnovers and rebounds but the Bears continued to add point separation. Worcester continued to battle in the fourth quarter with additional buckets, but the Bears' offense was too much to handle as they wrapped up an 83-49 victory over the Lancers.
Lomonaco led the game with 14 points while Smith recorded a double-double in action at 12 points and 10 rebounds.
What's Next:
The Lancers (6-12, 3-4) will start their second round of meetings on Saturday with a trip to MCLA at 12pm.
