WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State University Women’s Basketball is set to tip off one of its most anticipated community events of the season, hosting the 16th Annual Math Madness Game on Monday, January 12, as the Lancers welcome Emerson College for a non-conference showdown at John P. Brissette Court. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m.
“I love the energy that all the kids bring to this game, I’m aways so excited to play in front of them”, proclaims senior captain Hannah Lomonaco. The gymnasium will be alive with activity as over five hundred students, ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade from the local May St., Dual Language and Tatnuck Magnet schools, are scheduled to be in attendance for the exciting game and halftime activities.
“Math Madness is one of my favorite games of the year because of the environment” states senior captain, and education minor, Mia Haynes. “It reminds us of the joy of basketball and shows us the influence that we have on the next generation.”
This tradition brings area school children onto the Worcester State campus for a unique opportunity, at the start of a new year, to not only cheer on the Lancers, but also be actively involved and interact with a live college basketball game. Each student is provided a packet of basketball-centered math questions to complete over the course of the game, that include questions on scoring, court dimensions, player statistics, and more. “I cannot wait to see the kids having fun at our game and cheering us on” announces captain Hannah Manzaro. The day is aimed at engaging and challenging the young minds, turning every shot into a learning opportunity.
“Math Madness Day is a highlight of our season!” says Head Coach Karen Tessmer. “It's a fun game for both teams to play in front of cheering kids while also providing an educational opportunity for the students. Math can be FUN! It also a nice way for our WSU student athletes to connect with the local schools and be role models for young kids!”
After the final buzzer sounds, fans of all ages will get an opportunity to meet the players from both programs, as both the Lancers and the Lions will be signing autographs, answering questions and posing for photos.
