Worcester, MA - The 2021-22 ECHA Champions are set to kick off their second season on October 28 as announced in the 2022-23 Worcester State University Women’s Ice Hockey schedule. Led by head coach Eliza Kelley, the Lancers look to build from their 14-7-2 (6-0, ECHA) and continue their undefeated conference win streak. The Lancers will begin their ECHA title defense on January 17 against the Anna Maria Amcats.
Last season, the Lancers were led by senior forward and captain Clare Conway, the ECHA Player of the Year, as well as Amber Lee, ECHA Goaltender of the Year. Conway set the all-time scoring record at 19 goals in 23 games, while assisting the team’s second best 15 assists, while Lee recorded a .928% save percentage and 695 saves last season. Adding to the returning depth for the Lancers are fellow ECHA first team members Cassidhe Wozniak and Kylian Kelly. Lee is excited for what the coming season bring, “coming off such a successful season, and having so many returning players combined with a strong freshmen class holds a super exciting and promising upcoming season”.
Worcester State will begin their season with three road games, squaring up against Nichols College, Plymouth State and Castleton State before hosting their home opener versus Salve Regina on November 11. Worcester State will then travel to Salve on the 13th to complete the series. The Lancers will then play an additional home-away sequence versus New England College the following weekend, before their last road game of 2022 at Curry. The remainder of 2022 will have the Lancers at home against UMass Boston, Salem State and an additional game against Nichols.
The Lancers start of 2023 by hosting Utica over winter break, followed by a home-away series against Southern Maine. Following their opening ECHA game versus Anna Maria, the Lancers will take on Western New England, Assumption and Wilkes in a trio of home-away series matchups.
Worcester State will wrap up their regular season with three home games, facing off against Curry, Anna Maria, which will be played on February 11 at the DCU Center, and Rivier. Worcester State concludes their regular season when they travel to Rivier on February 18.
“The team consensus is to be relentless and play with grit” expressed Conway. “We’ve started to build our team identity on being both physically and mentally tough and everyone is buying into that. We want to build off of the success we had last season and defend our title. We’ve added new talent to the program to combine with veteran players that will help us be successful this year. We set the bar high last year, and now we are back to prove it wasn’t just a fluke.”
