Women's Lacrosse Drops NEWLA Opener To Framingham State
Worcester, MA --- Despite five goals from senior Colleen Manning, Worcester State could not hold off Framingham State as they fell in their first NEWLA game to the Rams, 16-10. Junior Karen Feeley also had four ground balls and two caused turnovers in the setback for WSU.
Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Heather Massee (Billerica, MA) netted five goals with an assist and classmate Chelsea Temple (Rutland, VT) added four markers to help lead Framingham State to a 16-10 triumph over Worcester State in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action this evening.
The Rams (1-1, 1-0 NEWLA) were also paced by second-year Louie Rijo (Salem, MA) who notched with a hat-trick while junior Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, MA) finished with four ground balls, four caused turnovers, five draw controls and a pair of tallies. Temple and freshman Marissa Canfield (Billerica, MA) both ended the contest with three ground balls apiece.
Senior Colleen Manning (Plainville, MA) recorded five goals and one helper to lead the Lancers (0-3, 0-1 NEWLA) as freshman Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA) chipped in with two goals in the setback. Defensively, junior Karen Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) led the effort with four ground balls with a pair of forced miscues. First-year Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) also picked up a trio of ground balls for WSU.
Framingham State sophomore Kelsey Turner (Billerica, MA) recorded the win in her first start of the season. Turner collected three saves for the visitors while junior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) made six stops in the loss for the Blue and Gold.
After Strazzere put Worcester State up 7-5 early on in the second period, the Rams would go on a 3-0 run with two tallies from senior Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, MA) for the 8-7 edge, three minutes into the frame.
Over the next seven minutes of game play, Manning, sophomore Daryl Powell (Beverly, MA) and junior Meaghan Sheehan (Dunstable, MA) help WSU would open up a 10-8 lead at the 17:15 mark.
But then Framingham State would seize the momentum as they would play solid defense, take advantage of several miscues and close out the game with an 8-0 surge for the final score. Temple would record three of her five goals in the run while Rijo and Massee each tacked on two for the visitors.
Worcester State originally led 4-1 with 14:55 off the clock in the opening stanza as Manning scored three goals and dished an assist on the fourth. The Rams would close out the half strong with a 3-1 spurt over the final five minutes of the first period to only trail by one at the intermission (6-5).
Framingham State had a commanding lead in shots (42-17) and shots on goal (22-13) while they also enjoyed a 25-21 edge in ground balls. The Rams were 6-for-13 on free position shots for the game (5-for-7 in second half) while WSU was 3-for-5 with opportunities outside the semicircle. FSU outscored the hosts, 11-4 in the final frame alone.
Both squads will play LEC opponents in non-conference affairs in the next week. Worcester State will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday for a 4 PM road game while Framingham State heads to Rhode Island College for a 6 o'clock matchup.
