Lancers Battle with Bears in Pituutary Tumor Awareness Game

Worcester, MA- With their first home game action since their return from Spring Break, the Worcester State Lacrosse team (5-4, 0-0) opens up conference play this afternoon as they welcome the Bridgewater State Bears (8-1, 0-0). Today's game is also played in honor of Joe Palmisano, father of student athlete Amanda Palmisano, and avid Lancer supporter, who passed away from a Pituitary Tumor last year and to raise awareness and educate the public on pituitary gland and pituitary tumors. 

About 13,770 pituitary tumors are diagnosed annually in the U.S. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the population has a pituitary tumor, however, most of these are undetected because the tumors are small. Pituitary tumors can occur in all age groups but tend to be detected most commonly in 50–75-year-olds. To learn more about Pituitary tumors please visit abta.org.

How it Happened:

Worcester would be the first to the punch as sophomore Kerry Brown (Billerica, MA) would score the first of the day off a quick pass to the center from junior Molly Witkowski (Greenville, NY). The Bears would then record three unanswered goals to close out the back and forth first quarter with a 3-1 score. Bridgewater would tack on two more goals before the Lancers began to mount their way back into the action off a wiggle and free goal from Witkowski. The Bears would add a sixth goal but after a card would put the Lancers up a player, senior Abbie Wing (Griswold, CT) would take a pass from behind the cage from junior Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, MA) for number three. Wing would then record goal five off a pass from the side of the crease from Witkowski. Bridgewatwer would record their own man up goal with under three to go and grab number eight with just over a minute until halftime to take a 8-5 score into the half.

Worcester opened up the scoring in the second half off a Wing free position shot. In a quarter riddled with cards and fouls neither team was able to grab much ground as the Bears added two more goals and Worcester was able to record goal seven with just over two minutes left on a quick break goal with the player advantage by junior Shannon Donahue (Dennis, MA). Bridgewater would open the scoring in the fourth quarter but Worcester was able to answer back with a junior Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, MA) five minutes into the quarter. As the temperatures continued to drop the Bears managed to find some offensive heat and went for another four unanswered to wrap up the action taking the 15-8 win.

Senior Olivia LaValle (Peabody, MA) would record 21 saves in the action.

The Blue and Gold (5-5, 0-1) are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Keene State for a 6:30 faceoff with the Owls.
