Lancers Tame the Golden Bears for Victory

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Women's Lacrosse team (5-6, 0-1) is back home this evening as they host the Western New England Golden Bears in the annual Pink Out Game. Today's game is played in partnership with the Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund, which aims to help raise awareness for research, testing and symptoms. Donations are actively being collected to support the campaign.

How it Happened:

The Lancers took an early lead thanks to an amazing solo goal from junior Shannon Donahue (Dennis, MA), but shortly after WNE would get one right back to level the game. Senior Abbie Wing (Griswold, CT) would score the second goal for the Lancers with just under five minutes to go in the first, but once again WNE would get another right back. Then with three minutes to go senior Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, MA) would give the Lancers another goal to give them the lead 3-2 to end the first period. WNE would get on the board first in the second period to level the game. Shortly after that Erickson would net another for the Lancers giving them the lead back. Erickson would get her third goal of the game with just under a 1:30 left in the half, extending their lead 5-3 going into the second half.

The second half started with WNE striking first, chopping into the lead of the Lancers. Shortly after that goal, the Golden Bears would score again to level the score at 5 goals apiece. Then just as the time ticked down sophomore Kerry Brown (Billerica, MA) would put the Lancers ahead 6-5 going into the final quarter of the game. To open the fourth, Wing would net a quick goal, extending the lead to two goals for the Lancers. WNE would score a couple of minutes later, cutting the lead to one. After another couple of minutes Junior Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, MA) would find the back of the net for the Lancers adding to the lead once again. Less than a minute later Donahue would net her second goal of the game making it a 9-6 For the Lancers midway through the fourth quarter. With just under two minutes left, Donahue would find the back of the net again, making it a four goal lead for the Lancers with the time winding down. The Lancers would grab the win 10-6 in this outing.

Senior Olivia LaValle would record her career 100th ground ball and nine saves in the win.

What's Next:

Women's Lacrosse (6-6, 0-1) will now have a rare midseason weekend off before returning to their game schedule on April 12th when they host Mass. Maritime at 4pm for their Annual One Love Game to honor Yeardley Love, a UVA Women's Lacrosse player who was murder by her ex-boyfriend and to raise awareness for Domestic Violence.
