Lancers Continue Conference Success with Win over MMA

Worcester, MA- After a thrilling and decisive victory over Framingham State on Tuesday, the Worcester State Women's lacrosse team (9-6, 3-1) looks to maintain control of their destiny tonight as they face off with Mass. Maritime in this year's annual One Love Game. Founded in honor of UVA student-athlete Yeardley Love, One Love is a national nonprofit that provides prevention education to young people about the importance of healthy relationships, empowering them to identify and avoid abuse.

We know that everyone will be in a relationship at some point in their life, whether it's with friends, families, or partners. But what we've realized is that most of us aren't taught how to have healthy relationships. One Love helps people identify what unhealthy and potentially abusive relationships may look like, and practice healthy relationship behaviors in their own life.

How it Happened:

For this critical conference matchup for Worcester State, the Lancers would jump off to a quick start, scoring the game's first goal in the first minute. The goal would be scored by senior Abbie Wing (Griswold, CT), who ensured that she would make no mistake in front of the net. After some great defense, the Lancers stormed down the field, scoring their 2nd of the game through a sweet shot by junior Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, MA), who slotted the shot through the goalkeeper's legs. The Lancers would keep their offensive momentum high, tacking on two more goals in quick succession through senior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, MA) and senior Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, MA). The Buccaneers would continue their offensive struggles while the Lancers would keep the pressure on Mass. Maritime. Sophomore Meghan Bowen (Westfield, MA) would coolly put it past the keeper, making it five, and a minute later, junior Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, MA) would make it six for Worcester State. Bowen would score her second goal of the day off a pass from Hurley, which all stemmed from a free possession play. Before the quarter would end, sophomore Madigan Kelly (Bourne, MA) would score her first of the game while Erickson would find her second, putting the Lancers up 9-0 at the end of the first quarter. 

To start the second quarter, the Lancers would win the draw and proceed to play some great team offense. The Lancers would break down the Buccaneers' defense, eventually finding junior Molly Witkowski (Greenville,NY) who placed it in the back of the net . The Lancers would slow the game down, controlling the clock and possession. Erickson would score the next three of the game propelling the Lancers to a 13-0 lead at halftime. 

In the third quarter we would see the Lancers continue to chew the clock by possessing the ball and playing great defense. For the first goal of the second half, Wing would find Bowen who would shoot it across her body for the 14th goal scored by the Lancers. 

Within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter the Buccaneers would find their first goal of the game off a free position play. A few minutes later the Lancers would respond with their own goal scored by Vincent. The Buccaneers would find another goal putting the score to 15-2 as the final minutes clicked down. The Lancers would match Mass Maritime once more through another Vincent goal. The conference matchup would conclude with the score 16-2 capping off a great Lancers win. 

What's Next:

The Blue and Gold (10-6, 4-1) will close out their season on Saturday at 11am when they host Fitchburg State for this year's Senior Game, played in honor of the 2025 senior class.
