Engineers Defeat Lancers 3-1 in Tuesday Night Action
WORCESTER, Mass. –The Engineers of MIT defeated the Worcester State Lancers 3-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday (Sep. 6) night at John Coughlin Stadium, as the Engineers outshot the Lancers 30-5 throughout the entirety of the match.

MIT's Amy Apostol (Los Gatos, Calif.) totaled three points as she notched both a goal and an assist on the night. The other two goals came from Montana Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Selin Selman (New Rochelle, N.Y.). The duo of Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Sophia Struckman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the team in shots with six and five, respectively.
For the Lancers, freshman Skylar Alves (Ashburnham, Mass.) registered her first collegiate goal on an assist from defenseman Beth Spinazzola (Westford, Mass.). Alves led the team with two shots, while Sarah Kane (Sutton, Mass.), Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.), and Ashleigh Howland (Wilmington, Mass.) registered the remaining three.
MIT started the scoring in the 10th minute of play when Apostol passed ahead and setup Reilly for a great shot on goal which passed Worcester's keeper, Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, Mass.). They came back again and went ahead 2-0 on a 25-yard blast from Selman following a corner kick.
Worcester State made the game interesting when Spinazzola positioned a great ball for Alves who then beat her defender and took the timely shot. Alves' ball rolled just past the keeper and just-about bounced off the post into the net to cut the Engineers' lead in half (2-1) right before the intermission.
The second half score stood at 2-1 for a good 15 minutes before Apostol dribbled through the Lancers' defense and scored the third goal of the game, in turn, resulting in the 3-1 victory on the Engineers' end.
MIT's keeper, Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) earned her first win of the season as she marked three saves in the 90 minutes of play. Worcester State's O'Donnell suffered her second loss of the season in a 12-save performance.
MIT opens at home on Thursday (Sep. 8) night as they will entertain Emmanuel College in a 7 p.m. matchup. The Lancers take a break until Saturday (Sep. 10) where they will start their five-game road-game streak, starting with cross-town opponents, Clark University.
