How it Happened:
This evening's conference matchup started out hot, with a goal within the first two minutes of the game the Lancers secured an early lead thanks to an amazing rebound shot by junior Amanda Cosco (Watertown, MA). After taking the early lead, the Lancers persisted and kept creating chances, including two solid attacks by junior Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA). The game calmed down after the first 15 minutes and became more controlled with both teams possessing the ball, trying to make their way forward. The teams in the first half continued to be evenly matched, with each side getting their chances withWorcester claiming the 12 shot advantage to the Bears six attempts, forcing Lancers junior goalkeeper Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) to make 3 first half saves.
The second half started out with an energized intensity. Lemanski made a great run down the field right away and had a shot on target that barely missed and hit the bar. The game continued on how it left off in the first half. A very two-sided, back and forth game that moved from one side to the other. Both teams showed great combination play and lots of intensity. With 30 minutes left to play, junior Olivia Magierowski (Brimfield, MA) let one fly from about 30 yards out and unfortunately hit the crossbar as Worcester looked to build a bit of cushion as the Bears were ramping up their attack at every turn. The ball rebounded right to another teammate's foot, giving the Lancers another chance but that also hit the crossbar after a redirection by the Bridgwater goalkeeper. With 15 minutes to go, and more intense back and forth as the temperature on the field was in direct contrast to the cooling temperatures outside, Gumienny was once again tested on the line and came up with a heroic save to keep the victory alive. The last moments were packed with intensity, fire and a lot of passion. Magierowski was awarded a free kick, not far from the net, and once again hit only the crossbar. After some last minute controversy, the Lancers bagged the 1-0 conference victory in a down to the wire finish..
What's Next:
The Lancers (7-3-1,5-0) take a step away from conference excitement next week as they head to Roger Williams for a 4pm start.
