Worcester, MA- After claiming a thrilling and pivotal conference win on Homecoming last Saturday over Bridgewater State, the Lancer's Women's Soccer team (7-3-1, 5-0) is taking a step out of conference for a midweek battle with Roger Williams as they aim to continue their winning ways.
Final
Worcester State: 1
Roger Williams: 3
How it Happened:
In a dreary and windy game down in Rhode Island, the Lancers would put up a solid start against the Hawks as they matched intensity from the start. Both teams would work to move the ball through the wind and down the pitch for solid chances at the cage but the pressure was high, with little room to find an opening. Roger Williams would find a few good chances midway through the first but the Blue and Gold's defense would shore up any gaps to keep them off the board. Worcester would respond with a few deep looks into the Hawks box, but struggled early to find the right sequence for the goal. As the clock just ticked under the two minute mark the Hawks were able to work the ball around the box and cross a pass in front of the cage to redirect it into the backlog the net for a 1-0 lead. The Lancers nearly had a chance to equalize in the last 30 seconds but Roger Williams' wall on the free kick by senior Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) just clipped the attempt out of danger.
Worcester would come out with a continued intensity in the second half as they continued to push their way down the field working to find their opening goal. Roger Williams would push hard but Lancer goalkeeper junior Ella Gumienny (Douglas, MA) would continue to prevail on defense. In the 68' minute the Hawks wound double their lead as they worked around the Lancers continued pressure. Worcester would give it their all to counter the goal differential, but that attack would leave them vulnerable for the Hawks third strike of the game. Worcester would get one back before the final buzzer as junior Sophia Farr (Princeton, MA) would strike a shot high right, but Worcester would ultimately fall 3-1.
