Women’s Volleyball’s Winning Streak Snapped by Plymouth State at Framingham State Tri-Match

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – After winning 12 straight games with the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Framingham State, Plymouth State snapped Worcester State’s winning streak as the Panthers posted a 3-0 win in the second game of the tri-match.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – After winning 12 straight games with the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Framingham State, Plymouth State snapped Worcester State's winning streak as the Panthers posted a 3-0 win in the second game of the tri-match.

 

THE BASICS

WORCESTER STATE 3, FRAMINGHAM STATE 0

The Lancers extended their winning streak to 12 with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-17) MASCAC win over Framingham State in the first game of the tri-match. Worcester State's junior outside hitter, Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) led the Lancers with a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs.

 

After trading points in the beginning of the first set, Worcester State gained a three point lead on a kill from King and an Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) service ace. Framingham State got within two twice more, until Worcester State went on a 14-4 run to close out the set at 25-13. The Lancers registered their highest team hitting percentage of .353 in the first set.

 

Worcester State took the first lead of the second set on a kill from Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.). However, Framingham State came back and the Rams scored three consecutive points with Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) at the service. The Lancers knotted the score at 6-6 moments later following a kill from King and a Framingham State error. Following three more ties, Worcester State jumped ahead on kill from Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.). The Lancers held the lead throughout the remainder of the set, slowly pushing away from the Rams for the 25-18 win.

 

The Lancers came out strong in the final set with Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn) and Murphy at the service for a 6-2 lead. With a service ace from Framingham's Brenna Marquis (Coventry, Conn.), the Rams got within two moments later. Though, Worcester State once again pushed away and then went on a 5-1 run to advance the lead to eight and leave the Rams in the dust.

 

  • As a team, Worcester State held a .263 hitting percentage. Framingham State marked a negative attack percentage.
  • The Lancers held a 40-21 kill advantage over the Rams.
  • The Blue and Gold's attack was led by King who had 13 kills. Carens logged 11 kills while Murphy recorded eight kills with a team-high .368 kill percentage.
  • Nolan assisted the Lancers' offense with a game-high 35 assists.
  • Leavens picked up a game-high 22 digs for Worcester State.
  • The Rams' offense was led by Kelly Brinkman (Gardiner, N.Y.) who collected six kills. Whalen registered four kills with a .571 attack percentage.
  • Victoria Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.) dug up a team-high 18 ball in the loss for Framingham State.

  

PLYMOUTH STATE 3, WORCESTER STATE 0

The Plymouth State Panthers snapped the Lancers' 12-game winning streak as they downed Worcester State by set scores of 26-24, 25-21, and 25-22.  

 

Worcester State jumped off to a 6-2 lead, though Plymouth State rallied back and knotted the game at 8-8 on a kill by Ari Linden (Lena, Ill.). Worcester State took advantage of two Plymouth attack errors and saw kills from Carens and Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) to hold a 14-9 lead. Then the Panthers came back with five consecutive points with Shannon Howland (Delmar, N.Y.) at the service to knot the score at 14-14. Following four more ties, Plymouth State sealed the set win with kills from Alexis Bowers (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.).

 

After four ties, Worcester State pushed ahead to a five point lead on Plymouth attack errors. The Lancers did not allow the Panthers to get within four until Plymouth State went on a 4-0 run on points from Sporer, Jill Tiner (Salem N.H.), and Megan Bailey (Canterbury, N.H.) to knot the score at 15-15. After back-and-forth play, the Panthers concluded the set with a 7-1 run with Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and Sporer at the service.

 

Following a 3-0 start for Plymouth State in the third set, Worcester State scored five points on kills from Chapin and Carens. The teams traded points until Plymouth State scored seven consecutive points for a four-point advantage (18-14). Worcester State was able to get within one throughout the remainder of the set, however, the Panthers earned the set win on a kill from Linden.

 

  • The Panthers logged a .165 attack percentage while the Lancers stood at .118.
  • Plymouth State held a 43-32 advantage in kills.
  • Plymouth State saw 11 kills apiece from Linden and Sporer while Bowers collected 10.
  • Bailey notched 34 assists in the win, while Peruch led in the digs category with 28.
  • Worcester State's King recorded her second double-double of the day with 11 kills and 12 digs.
  • Nolan once again had a team-best 28 assists, while Leavens led the Lancers defensively with 14 digs.

The team returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 18) when they travel to Bridgewater State for a 6 p.m. MASCAC matchup.
