How it Happened:
The Worcester State volleyball team put together one of its grittiest performances of the season Tuesday night at Logan Gymnasium, pushing rival Framingham State to the limit in a thrilling five-set battle (27-25, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 11-15).
The Lancers came out swinging in the opening frame, using back-to-back kills from sophomore Beatrice Gamboa-Estrella (Simi Valley, CA) to spark the offense and eventually tie the set at 20-20 after a kill by senior Cassidy D'Esposito (Milford, NY). Senior Paige Thomason (Hudson, MA) provided the heroics late, delivering the clutch kill to even things at 25 before sealing the set with another attack to lift Worcester to a 27-25 win.
After Framingham State rallied to even the match in set two, Worcester responded with resilience. The Lancers again jumped out to an early lead behind Gamboa-Estrella and first year Reece Connors (Fresno, CA), and though the Rams eked out a 25-23 decision, Worcester's confidence never wavered.
Set three showcased the Lancers' grit. With Gamboa-Estrella powering the attack, but Worcester turned an 8-3 advantage into another nail-biter, ultimately prevailing 25-23 on a Thomason finisher.
The Rams edged the fourth to force a decisive fifth, but Worcester continued to impress. Kaitlyn Anthony (Gastonia, NC) came alive with eight kills on the night, while setter first year Maggie Luke (Chelmsford, MA) ran the offense with 26 assists and four service aces. Defensively, Katherine Crateau (North Andover, MA) was outstanding, racking up a match-high 48 digs to anchor the back row.
Overall, Gamboa-Estrella led the Lancers with a match-high 19 kills to go along with 15 digs, while Thomason added eight kills and three blocks in clutch moments. D'Esposito chipped in eight kills and six total blocks, and Connors tallied 11 kills, six digs, and two aces. Worcester's defense shined, out-digging the Rams 114-104.
Though Framingham closed out the fifth set 15-11, the Lancers showcased depth, resilience, and balanced contributions across the lineup, pushing one of the league's top teams to the wire.
