Worcester, MA- In a new year return to action the Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey team (5-5, 4-1) journey north to Castleton State to take on the SUNY Potsdam Bears in the first round of the Bagley Invitational.
Final
Worcester State: 2
SUNY Potsdam: 0
How it Happened:
It would be a slower start for the Lancers as they hunted for a chance to advance to the Bagley Invitational Championship but with under five minutes left in the first junior Kaia Carlson (Denver, CO) would collect the rebounded passes from junior Fiona Hatton (Homer, AK) to get Worcester on the board for the 1-0 lead in the first.
The second period would continue to find an offensive stalemate as both the Bears and Lancers each worked to find the scoring rhythm while holding steady in defense. Each team recorded power play chances were unable to convert for further scoring. An evenly matched period, with Worcester recording 15 to 14 shots on cage, neither team was able to find the smallest crack as the game moved to third.
Worcester was primed to hold off the Bears and push their way to the championship with a solid defensive presence in the third. With just under a few minutes left in the period the Bears would go all in, pulling their goalie in a bid to force overtime action but the Lancers would capitalize on the open net for a 2-0 goal lead by junior Madelyn Franta (Superior, WI).
Senior Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, MA) recorded 39 saves in the action to claim the shutout.
What's Next:
Worcester State (6-5, 4-1) will now meet with Castleton/Anna Maria in the Championship/Consolation at 1/4pm at the Spartan Arena.
