Bridgewater State Bests Worcester State, 19-12

WORCESTER, Mass.—Bridgewater State's Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Bears to a 19-12 win over the Worcester State University women's lacrosse team in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup this Saturday afternoon at the John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

With the loss, the Lancers slide to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the MASCAC. The Bears improve to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

McDonough led the Bears, scoring a career high of seven goals and three assists for a total of 10 points. Also chipping in for the Bears was Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) and Alex Lynch (Plainville, Mass.), scoring five and four goals apiece.

The first half consisted of a back-and-forth battle between the Lancers and the Bears until the last minute of play when Bridgewater State's Ettridge and McDonough scored two back-to-back goals giving the Bears an 8-6 advantage over the Lancers going into halftime.

The Bears pulled ahead of the Lancers quickly in the second half, scoring two goals within just three minutes of play. Worcester State answered back as Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) received a pass from teammate Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.), cutting the deficit to just three. Soon after McDonough scored consecutive two goals putting the Bears ahead 12-7. Next, the Lancers then narrowed the gap, scoring three goals from Sarah Cohan (Lowell, Mass.), Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.), and Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.). However, Bridgewater closed the game with a 5-0 run in the final 12 minutes of play.

Co-captain Sutherland led the Lancers' offense with six assists, while Vecchiarelli had five goals, giving her 21 for the season. Martin also chipped in four points for the Lancers (3G, 1A).

Bridgewater held the advantage in ground balls, clears, and shots over Worcester State, as they picked up 12, went 17-for-17, and had 35 of each, respectively. However, Worcester State held the advantage in draw controls, winning 19 while the Bears won only 14.

Worcester State's goalkeeper Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.) had nine saves for the afternoon but suffers the loss and her record slides to 3-8. Bridgewater State's netminder, Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.), recorded 13 saves, earning her the win and her record improves to 6-5.

Next up, Worcester State will travel to MCLA on April 18 for a 6 p.m. matchup. The Bears will travel to Mass. Maritime on the same day.
