Gilson Leads Lancers to Sixth Place Finish at Corsair Classic

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Outdoor Track and Field team would finally get a chance to kick off their season today as they headed to UMass-Dartmouth for the Corsairs Classic. Hoping for better weather after last year, which resulted in high winds and pounding rain, the Lancers trekked east to kick off their outdoor season. With just a touch of wind to add some excitement to the day Worcester would aim to make their presence known. Worcester would end the day claiming the sixth place finish in the meet after collecting 44 points on the day.

Worcester would not wait long to make their first mark on the season as they grabbed second in the 4x100m with a time of 53.04 behind the speed of first years Ciara Adu-Addo (Worcester, MA), Alexis Strong (Southington, CT) and Lezie Zakrzewski (Taunton, MA) and  senior Eryca Lopes (Ayer, MA). Sophomore Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) would next be in action for the Lancers as she took on the 1,500m claiming 21st with a time of 5:38.08 in the race. Sophomores Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA) and Emily Colantuoni (Haverhill, MA) were a duo in the 800m with O'Malley claiming 16th with a time of 2:48.47 as Colantuoni claimed 24th with 3:11.63)

In the 100m spring first years Mia Guinto (West Boylston, MA) and Meg Driscoll (Mansfield, MA) would each go for speed with Driscoll crossing in 15th in a time 13.83, while Guinto would come in 24th with a time of 15.18. The Lancers would claim the victory in the 400m behind the speed of junior Carly Gilson (Grafton, MA) who blazed through the finish line in a new personal best time of 62.10. Joining her in the race was first year Lexie Zakrzewski (Taunton, MA) who crossed in 15th with a time of 69.08. In one of the final sprint races of the day, the 200m, Gilson would return to action, recording a 28.46 for 10th. Adu-Addo would claim 13th in the event with a 28.65, while Strong would take 17th with a 29.09. Guinto would round out the quartet of runners with a 31st place finish in a time of 31.39. 

On the field event side Adu-Addo, current indoor long jump record holder, would grab a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 4.98m while fellow relay teammate Strong would nab 8th on a 4.44m jump. First year Lauren Condike (East Longmeadow, MA) would go for height in the high jump, notching a 1.47m for a fourth place finish in the event. Lopes would return to competition mode in the triple jump, recording a 7th place finish on a 9.59m leap.

First year Jadah Stokes (Savannah, GA) would begin her outdoor career with a 7th place finish in the hammer on a 36.11m toss. It would take Stokes until her final attempt in the shot put to claim second, but with a distance of 10.63m she met the mark in the event. Senior Sthanisha Moreau (Taunton, MA) would claim 11th with a 9.40m with sophomore Ava Piccolo (Tewksbury, MA) marking 9.04m for 17th. First year Luana Grau-Moura (Marlborough, MA) would finish in 28th with a measurement of 7.97m. Piccolo would quickly return to action for the Javelin where she would claim 16th with a distance of 23.81m while leading the way in the event was junior Arianna Constant (Leominster, MA) who claimed 12th with a 25.09m. First year Gianna Noyes (Uxbridge, MA) would take home 20th with a 22.56m while sophomore Erin Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) would end in 29th with a 13.87m throw. 

Concluding the day would see the discus field chalk full of Lancers as Grau-Moura finished 10th after marking a 27.67m as Piccolo would nab 20th with a 21.15m. Constant would end her day with a 22nd place finish after measuring 19.33m while Noyes rounded out the throws with a 25th place on 18.62m.

Worcester State is back in action next Friday afternoon when the journey to Regis College for the Regis Classic.
