Lancers Women's Cross Country Open Season with Win at Jim Sheehan Invite
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State women’s cross country team opened its season with a short trip north to Fitchburg State for the annual Jim Sheehan Invite. The Lancers were led by sophomore Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA), who placed third overall and second in team scoring, helping Worcester secure the team title with 20 points in the tri-meet against Fitchburg State and Curry.

The Lancers were led by sophomore Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA), who placed third overall and second in team scoring, helping Worcester secure the team title with 20 points in the tri-meet against Fitchburg State and Curry.
Edwards crossed the line in a blistering 14:09.43 in the two-mile race, followed closely by Anna Serafini in fourth at 14:17.86. Junior Kelsey Gendreau finished fifth in 14:25.88, with seniors Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) and Bridget O'Malley rounding out the top five for the Lancers in 14:49.56 and 15:03.92, respectively.
The depth of Worcester's squad was on display as first-years Janine Betcher (Fontana, CA), Caydence Carr (Upton, MA), and Tamara Ayala-Garcia (Lawrence, MA) all broke the 16-minute mark to finish close behind the lead pack.
The Lancers return to action in two weeks at the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College.
