Worcester, MA- After a few weeks of training the Worcester State Women's Cross Country headed to Westfield State today to compete in the James Earley invite in a precursor training match for the MASCAC Championship. The Lancers were led by senior Leah Berg (Worcester, MA) who finished in 36th place to help Worcester to 234 points and an eighth place finish. The result marks another consistent showing for the Lancers as they continue to build momentum through the midseason stretch.
Leading the way for Worcester was Berg, who crossed the line in 36th place with a time of 20:32.18, setting the pace for the Blue and Gold. First year Anna Serafini (Leominster, MA) and sophomore Samantha Edwards (East Longmeadow, MA) weren't far behind, finishing 50th (20:52.52) and 52nd (20:56.07) respectively, keeping Worcester tightly packed in the scoring mix.
Senior Kelsey Gendreau (Seekonk, MA) and senior Bridget O'Malley (Leominster, MA) rounded out Worcester's top five, both clocking in at 21:30.65 to take 62nd and 67th, while first year Janine Betcher (Fontana, CA) also turned in a solid run, finishing 75th in 21:58.55.
The Lancers' tight spread and balanced scoring group helped secure their top-10 team finish in a competitive field. Worcester will look to carry this momentum into their next meet as they continue to prepare for the MASCAC Championships later this fall.
Worcester State is back in action on October 18th with a trip to Western New England in their final race before the championship.
