Curry Runs Away with 20-8 Win over Worcester State

MILTON, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team fell to the Curry Colonels by a score of 20-8 Thursday (Mar. 30) evening at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, Curry advances to 4-6 on the season, while Worcester State dips to 1-4.

Curry's Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) led the team in scoring (5 goals, 1 assist), ground balls (6), and draw controls (8), while. Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) tallied four goals on the occasion. Both Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, Mass.) and Abby Carnevale (Beverly, Mass.) picked up three goals apiece, while Rachel Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) and Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) chipped in two each.

Worcester State was guided by Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.) who led the Lancers with three goals, one assist and five draws. Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) and Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up two goals and an assist in the loss.

The Colonels held the advantage in shots (42-16), ground balls (21-10), and draw controls (18-12) throughout the contest. They also forced 25 Lancer turnovers on the occasion.

Worcester State was the first team to reach the scoreboard as Little scored on a helper from Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.) in the third minute. Curry soon matched that on a goal from Carnevale, and tied the score twice more in the first half before they ended the half with a 5-1 run, going into the intermission ahead 9-5.

The Lancers started the second half matching Curry in goals with two apiece in the first 10 minutes of play. However, Curry ran away from the Lancers as they scored nine consecutive goals to run the score up to 20-7. Worcester State concluded the game with a goal of their own to break the 9-0 run, which in turn, resulted in a final score of 20-8.

Curry's Rachel Smith (Arlington, Mass.) earned the win in goal as she stopped five shots in the 60 minutes played. Worcester State's Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.) suffered the loss in a 9-save performance.

Worcester State returns to action on Sunday (April 2) when they travel to Framingham State for a 7 p.m. conference opener.
